The symposium on “European materialities” aims to foster dialogue among research from various disciplines and approaches on the material dimensions of European integration and Europeanization.

While European studies most often focus on the processes of building institutions, frameworks, or intellectual and professional networks, they tend to overlook other, more “physical” manifestations of European integration.

Yet technical standards, concrete and steel infrastructure networks, and the movement of people, goods, and monetary or financial assets shape Europes that do not all coincide with the European Union (EU).

These study days thus aim to (re)intersect thematic and disciplinary perspectives on Europe as captured through its materialities, particularly around three complementary lines of inquiry: how should we study the materialities of European integration, and based on which key concepts?

What kind of Europe is shaped by European policies (and notably those of the EU), and how are these policies, in turn, conditioned by tangible factors (territories, resources, networks)?

Finally, can we envision European constructions alternative to that of the EU by tracing value chains, spaces of technical standards, or cultural practices that define “other” continental spaces?
