Kristof Vrancken lives and works in Hasselt (BE). His work has been published in national and international books and journals and exhibited in Belgium and abroad. He studied photography at the LUCA School of Arts, where he has been teaching and researching Hybrid media, Artistic Research, and Experimental Photography since 2008. He combines various disciplines including photography, painting, biology, and participatory design processes.

In his most recent works, Kristof uses nature not only as a subject but also as an agency in his images. By developing tactile prints with local plant extracts and using the principles of photosynthesis, he strengthens the relationship between the physical landscape and the image. As a post-digital artisan, he incorporates the entropic character as an integral part of the work. In doing so, he forces the viewer to rethink their relationship with time and nature. Kristof particularly explores the use of experimental photographic processes whereby additional layers of meaning could be added to an image by incorporating a non-human perspective. By using organic materials and plants of the photographed location as an active ingredient in the image, an interesting relationship between this landscape and the image itself is created: The landscape and the vegetation do not only form a passive subject, but they become an active and essential part of the image. They regain their agency in the image itself.

In his lecture, Kristof will elaborate on the realisation of his projects involving plants as active participants in his research and how uncertainty is an important factor in his research.
